Al-Taj News – A source in the office of French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said on Monday that French authorities had imposed a curfew in the city of Lille in northern France, effective from 18:00 GMT on Monday until 04:00 GMT on Tuesday, following riots over the weekend.
The source added that the two-day curfew also covers the cities of Douai, Wattignies, and Denain in northern France.
President Emmanuel Macron had acknowledged “failures” in the handling of protests against the rising cost of living and asked the police to adjust their methods of dealing with “troublemakers.”
This new crisis comes just six months before the presidential election, as far-right candidate Marine Le Pen leads opinion polls, while France, the eurozone’s second-largest economy, is under close scrutiny by financial markets because of its heavy debt burden.
